Soft starter / VFD for cement batching plant
Tags: Variable frequency drive
Q: In one of our application (cement batching plant) we are currently using gear boxes in controlling the speed of motors. Now we have planned to go for soft starters since we are using only a constant speed & its cost effective compare to vfd for inclined Conveyor 15kw & Mixer 50kw. Whether we can go for soft starter or a vfd for the same and why? And the clear difference between a VFD & a soft starter. Can we vary the speed of a motor during run time using soft starter as in a vfd?
A: If there is no need for a variation of speed, the Soft Starter is the ideal solution. Soft Starting solutions will enable a reduction in equipment size, reduced demand on the electrical network, zero harmonics (after starting), reduced maintenance on equipment, user friendly configuration and set up.... and a great commercial offer. Although the starting conditions can be very harsh (High Inertia), from units in new projects, through replacement of DOL starting and gears to replacement of slip ring motor starting with Soft Starters.
