Siemens Soft Starter Problem
Question:
I am using this starter in an LV panel for a 5.5 kW load as per client requirement.
I am new to this type. During the testing of this feeder, I have connected a 5 hp motor which runs well on startup. But after the soft start (10 seconds ramp up time) it suddenly trips and red LED comes up which indicates STATE/ BYPASS FAILURE. I have also done every troubleshoot as per manual. Please suggest me some measures so that my motor runs continuously even after the soft start.
Troubleshooting:
Can you in any way check that the internal bypass contacts close properly after starting the motor? There could be some internal fault in the unit, or it could have been incorrectly installed (follow the manual), such that there is no driving voltage for the coil of a bypass contactor.
After the soft start, the unit is supposed to bypass (short out) its semiconductor switches, in order to reduce loss and rise in temperature.
You just need to test if there is any remaining voltage across the two bypass contacts. Be careful with how you do it! As soon as the starter fails, the voltage will go from just a few volts, to the full line voltage, and you will always have the full phase voltage on the one side of your meter, so let a professional carry it out for you, with all the safety precautions activated.
You might also be able to just connect some kind of voltage recorder, and then read the result after a starting sequence or two.
A last option could be to request a replacement unit from Siemens, and see if the fault persists, in which case you most likely have an incorrect installation.
